Bhaktapur, the City of Devotees, is the best-preserved of the three royal cities in the Kathmandu Valley. Unlike Kathmandu and Patan, Bhaktapur has maintained much of its medieval character — walking through its brick-paved streets feels like stepping back in time.

The Durbar Square is anchored by the magnificent Nyatapola Temple, a five-storey pagoda that is the tallest temple in the valley and an architectural marvel. The 55-Window Palace showcases extraordinary carved wooden windows, while the Golden Gate (Sun Dhoka) is considered the finest piece of art in the valley.

Beyond the main square, Taumadhi Tol and Dattatreya Square each have their own character and temples. The pottery square (Potters' Square) is a living workshop where traditional pottery has been made for centuries. Bhaktapur is also famous for Juju Dhau (King Curd), a creamy yogurt that is a must-try.

The city charges an entry fee to non-residents, which funds preservation. The annual Bisket Jatra (New Year festival) in April transforms the city into a spectacular celebration.
