What is the best currency to bring to Nepal?

US Dollars (USD), Euros (EUR), and British Pounds (GBP) are the most widely accepted and easiest to exchange. Indian Rupees (INR) are also accepted in many places, especially near the border — but notes of ₹500 and above are not accepted in Nepal.

Can I use US Dollars or credit cards in Nepal?

Most local shops and restaurants only accept Nepali Rupees. Hotels, travel agencies, and some tourist-area restaurants may accept USD or cards, but often at unfavorable rates. ATMs are widely available in Kathmandu and Pokhara but scarce in rural and trekking areas — carry enough cash.

How often do Nepal exchange rates change?

Nepal Rastra Bank publishes new exchange rates every business day (Sunday–Friday). The NPR is pegged to the Indian Rupee at a fixed rate of 1 INR = 1.60 NPR, so INR rates rarely change. Other currencies fluctuate daily based on international markets.

What is the difference between buy and sell rates?

The 'buy' rate is what the bank pays you when you sell foreign currency to get NPR. The 'sell' rate is what the bank charges when you buy foreign currency with NPR. The sell rate is always higher — the difference (spread) is how banks earn on exchange.
