Nepal Time Now — 23:55 NPT (UTC+5:45)

The current local time in Nepal is 11:55 pm (23:55) NPT on Sunday, 1 November 2026, or Kartik 16, 2083 BS in the Bikram Sambat calendar Nepal actually runs on. Nepal Time (NPT) is UTC+5:45 — one of the world's rare 45-minute offsets — and Nepal does not observe daylight saving, so the offset holds all year.

All times NPT. Nepal spans about 800 km east to west but keeps a single timezone, so the sun rises in Biratnagar well before it does in Dhangadhi — from around 20 minutes earlier in June to half an hour earlier in December — even though both clocks read the same.

Why Nepal is 45 minutes off the hour

Nepal kept local solar time long after its neighbours standardised. Kathmandu ran on its own mean solar time — roughly UTC+5:41 — until 1920, when the country adopted UTC+5:30, the same offset British India used. For the next 66 years Nepal and India shared a clock.

That changed in 1986, when Nepal moved to UTC+5:45. The new offset was fixed on the meridian running through Gaurishankar, a Himalayan peak roughly 100 km east of Kathmandu, chosen as a national reference point. The practical effect was a clock that is legally and visibly Nepal's own rather than a borrowed one.

It leaves Nepal 15 minutes ahead of India — the smallest time difference between any two neighbouring countries — and makes NPT one of only three time zones in the world using a 45-minute offset, alongside the Chatham Islands (UTC+12:45) and Australia's unofficial Central Western time (UTC+8:45). Nepal has never observed daylight saving time, so unlike Europe or North America, the gap to Nepal changes only when the other country shifts its clocks.

Frequently asked questions

About Nepal's time zone and how it compares to the rest of the world.

What time zone is Nepal in?
Nepal uses Nepal Time (NPT), which is UTC+5:45. It is one of only a handful of time zones in the world with a 45-minute offset from UTC. Kathmandu, the capital, is in this single national time zone along with the rest of the country.
Why does Nepal have such an unusual time zone (UTC+5:45)?
Nepal's UTC+5:45 offset was chosen to set Nepal apart from its neighbours: India (UTC+5:30) and China (UTC+8). The 45-minute offset is rare globally — most time zones differ by full or half hours. Nepal adopted NPT officially in 1986.
Does Nepal observe daylight saving time?
No. Nepal does not observe daylight saving time (DST). The offset remains UTC+5:45 year-round, which makes converting between Nepal time and other countries predictable — except for countries that do observe DST (like the USA, UK, and most of Europe), where the difference to Nepal changes twice a year.
How many hours ahead of the USA is Nepal?
Nepal is approximately 10 hours 45 minutes ahead of US Eastern Time (EST, UTC-5) in winter, and 9 hours 45 minutes ahead in summer (EDT, UTC-4). For US Pacific Time: 13 hours 45 minutes ahead in winter (PST), 12 hours 45 minutes ahead in summer (PDT).
How many hours ahead of the UK is Nepal?
Nepal is 5 hours 45 minutes ahead of the UK in winter (GMT, UTC+0). During British Summer Time (BST, UTC+1) from late March to late October, the difference shrinks to 4 hours 45 minutes.
What time does the sun rise and set in Kathmandu?
Sunrise in Kathmandu ranges from about 5:09 am at the June solstice to 6:50 am at the December solstice, with sunset running from 7:02 pm down to 5:13 pm. Day length swings between roughly 13 hours 54 minutes and 10 hours 23 minutes. Because Nepal keeps one timezone across some 800 km, the sun rises earlier in Biratnagar in the east than in Dhangadhi in the far west — about 20 minutes earlier in June, and around half an hour earlier in December — even though both clocks read the same.
What is the time difference between India and Nepal?
Nepal is 15 minutes ahead of India. India uses IST (UTC+5:30) and Nepal uses NPT (UTC+5:45). This small but legally distinct difference reflects Nepal's political independence — it is the smallest non-zero time zone difference between any two neighbouring countries in the world.
