Frequently asked questions

About the Bikram Sambat calendar and how to convert dates.

What is Bikram Sambat (BS)?
Bikram Sambat (BS) is the official calendar of Nepal, named after the legendary king Vikramaditya. It runs approximately 56–57 years ahead of the Gregorian (AD) calendar. For example, 2025 AD corresponds to 2082 BS. The Nepali new year (Baisakh 1) falls in mid-April each year.
How do I convert AD to BS?
Select the 'AD → BS' tab, enter a Gregorian date using the date picker, and click 'Convert to Bikram Sambat'. The result shows the BS date in numeric form and Nepali Devanagari script. You can also click 'Today' to instantly convert today's date.
How do I convert BS to AD?
Select the 'BS → AD' tab, enter the Bikram Sambat year, month (1–12), and day, then click 'Convert to Gregorian'. The result shows the equivalent Gregorian date in ISO format and long-form English.
What date range does the converter support?
The converter supports BS 2000–2090, which corresponds to approximately AD 1943–2034. Dates outside this range are not supported by the underlying calendar data tables.
Why does Nepal use a different calendar?
Nepal officially adopted the Bikram Sambat calendar, which has Hindu roots and a longer historical record in the region. Government documents, public holidays, and official records in Nepal use BS dates. Many Nepalis use both calendars in daily life.
What are the months in the Nepali calendar?
The 12 Nepali months in order are: Baisakh (बैशाख), Jestha (जेठ), Ashadh (असार), Shrawan (साउन), Bhadra (भदौ), Ashwin (असोज), Kartik (कार्तिक), Mangsir (मङ्सिर), Poush (पौष), Magh (माघ), Falgun (फागुन), and Chaitra (चैत). Each month has 29–32 days.
