About this place

Sanla Pukhu — also recorded in older sources as Yattacheen Pukhu — lies in the Tachapal (Dattatreya Square) quarter of Bhaktapur, in Ward 9 of the municipality. It runs immediately alongside the Sanla Ganesh temple, one of the neighbourhood Ganesh shrines that sits within the broader Tachapal ritual circuit.

The pond itself is rectangular, ringed by a low retaining wall, and marked by two stone dhunge-dhara (water spouts) at its northwestern corner and a line of worn stone images of various deities along the eastern bank — the latter serving both as devotional markers and as perch points for residents who come to rest beside the water.

Although less visited than the ponds on the city's monumental axis, Sanla Pukhu is a rewarding stop for anyone already exploring Dattatreya Square; the temple, pond, spouts and surrounding Newar courtyards together form one of the more intact traditional ensembles in the eastern old city. Entry is free and no ticket is required beyond the general Bhaktapur Durbar Square entrance if you approach from the west.
