About this place

Syarpu Lake (Syarpu Daha) fills a green fold of the Rukum hills at about 1,370 metres, in Bafikot on the old trail country between the Bheri river and the high Karnali. Roughly 2.6 square kilometres of still water ringed by terraced fields and oak forest, it is western Nepal's most easily reached lake — about 35 kilometres by road from Musikot, the district headquarters and airstrip of Rukum West.

The lake is held sacred by the surrounding villages, who perform rituals at the shore to honour local deities and water spirits, and festival days bring streams of pilgrims and picnicking families to the waterside. This is the heartland of the Magar and Kham Magar communities, and an organised organic homestay village on the lake's third ward gives visitors a rare chance to stay inside that world — millet fields, drum rhythms, home-distilled hospitality.

Syarpu is at its most beautiful in and just after the monsoon, when the basin brims deep blue; egrets and kingfishers work the shallows, rowing boats can be hired, and an observation tower above the shore gives the full panorama. The lake drains toward the Bheri and supports local fish farming, and conservationists are working to hold the shoreline against encroachment.

For travellers, Syarpu works best as the overnight heart of a Rukum road journey — a place to slow down between the Dhorpatan country to the east and the Karnali highlands to the west, in a district that almost no tourist map yet marks.
