Gokarneshwar Mahadev Temple stands on the wooded banks of the Bagmati River at Gokarna, in the northeastern reaches of the Kathmandu Valley. Dedicated to Shiva as Gokarneshwar ("Lord of Gokarna"), the temple has been a place of worship since at least the 14th century, though the site's stone carvings and inscriptions attest to sanctity stretching back to the Licchavi era.

The temple's most celebrated feature is its collection of stone sculptures, considered among the finest in the valley. A large 8th-century image of Parvati is set into the temple's outer wall, and nearby panels show Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma in flowing Licchavi style. The riverside ghats are lined with further carvings, small shrines, and lingams — a treasure hunt for lovers of medieval Nepali art.

Gokarneshwar is best known as the primary destination for Kuse Aunsi, the Nepali equivalent of Father's Day, observed in late August or September. On this day, those who have lost their fathers come to the temple to perform shraddha (memorial rites) and bathe in the Bagmati. The ghats fill with families, marigold garlands, and the smoke of oil lamps — a deeply moving communal expression of filial devotion.

The temple's setting adjacent to the Gokarna Forest Resort (a former royal hunting reserve) makes it easy to combine a temple visit with a walk through the adjoining sal forest, where spotted deer and langur monkeys are common.
