Halesi Mahadev Temple is one of Nepal's most distinctive pilgrimage sites: a sacred cave complex in Khotang district where Hindu and Buddhist traditions converge in the same landscape. For Hindus it is a major Mahadev shrine associated with Lord Shiva; for Tibetan Buddhists it is revered as Maratika, the cave where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) is believed to have meditated and attained long-life realization.

Part of the shrine lies underground and is reached by descending a staircase into the cave, creating a ritual experience that feels markedly different from Nepal's open-air pagoda temples. The cave interior, rock formations, smoke-darkened walls, and concentrated flow of offerings give Halesi a powerful devotional atmosphere, especially during Maha Shivaratri and Bala Chaturdashi when pilgrimage numbers surge.

Nepal Tourism Board lists Halesi among the country's prominent Shaiva pilgrimage centres while also noting the nearby Buddhist monastic presence. That shared sacred geography is the site's defining character: visitors encounter a living example of Nepal's syncretic religious culture in the eastern hills.
