Kudan, also known as Nigrodharama, is an archaeological and pilgrimage site in Kapilvastu district, within the wider Lumbini-Kapilvastu Buddhist circuit. Buddhist tradition identifies the area with the place where the Buddha stayed when he returned to the Shakya kingdom after enlightenment and met his father, King Suddhodana, and other family members.

The site contains brick structural remains, stupas, and monastic traces rather than a single standing temple. It is best understood together with Lumbini and Tilaurakot: Lumbini marks the Buddha's birth, Tilaurakot represents the ancient Shakya capital, and Kudan preserves a quieter memory of the Buddha's return to his home region.

Visitors should expect an open archaeological landscape with limited on-site interpretation. Kudan works best as part of a half-day Kapilvastu circuit by hired vehicle from Lumbini or Taulihawa.

Know Kudan better than we do?

We write from research and reporting, and the ground changes faster than we can keep up. If something here is out of date, or you have been and would tell it differently, we would rather hear it.
