Sworgadwari, meaning 'Gateway to Heaven', is one of Nepal's most revered Hindu pilgrimage sites, perched on a forested ridge at 2,200 meters in the hills of Pyuthan district. According to Hindu tradition, this is where the sage Ved Vyas (Krishna Dwaipayana) retreated to meditate and compose the Mahabharata, and the sacred site marks the point where the Pandavas began their final ascent to heaven.
The temple complex is set amid dense forests of rhododendron, oak, and pine, with panoramic views of the surrounding mid-hills. The main shrine houses sacred fire pits (dhuni) that are said to have burned continuously for centuries. Several natural caves around the site are associated with various episodes from Hindu mythology.
The annual Sworgadwari Mela held on the full moon of Baisakh (April-May) draws tens of thousands of pilgrims from across western Nepal and northern India. During the festival, the normally quiet hilltop transforms into a vibrant fair with religious ceremonies, traditional music, and communal feasting.
Reaching Sworgadwari requires a trek of about 3 hours from the nearest road at Khalanga, the district headquarters of Pyuthan. The trail climbs through beautiful mid-hill countryside with terraced farms and scattered villages. Despite being one of the most important pilgrimage sites in western Nepal, Sworgadwari remains little-known to international visitors.
