Chitwan Rapti River Canoe
A traditional dug-out canoe ride on the Rapti River for crocodile and bird spotting.
The Rapti River canoe ride is a quiet, slow-paced wildlife experience — a traditional dugout canoe (called a hollowed-out tree trunk) glides silently downstream, close enough to the riverbank to spot Mugger and Gharial crocodiles basking on the sand. The lack of engine noise means birds and animals don't flush as you approach. The ride typically takes 45–60 minutes and covers a few kilometers of the river. A naturalist guide sits at the front and points out wildlife — kingfishers, egrets, storks, and occasionally gharial crocodiles with their distinctive long, thin snouts. The best time is early morning when the river is calm and wildlife is active. Most lodges in Sauraha arrange canoe rides as part of a safari package. The canoe is stable and safe — life jackets are provided and the water is shallow in most sections. The season runs October through May. Bring binoculars and a camera with a zoom lens. The canoe ride is often combined with a jungle walk or jeep safari for a full-day wildlife experience.
