Everest Base Camp sits at 5,364 meters on the Khumbu Glacier, in the shadow of the world's highest mountain. More than a trekking destination, it is a place of living mountaineering history — the staging ground from which Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary launched the first successful summit in 1953, and where hundreds of expeditions have set out since.
The Khumbu region surrounding Base Camp is the homeland of the Sherpa people, whose Buddhist culture, legendary resilience, and warm hospitality define the experience as much as the mountains do. Namche Bazaar (3,440m), the Sherpa capital, is a vibrant trading town. Tengboche Monastery (3,867m), with Ama Dablam and Everest as its backdrop, is one of the most photographed locations in Nepal. Dingboche and Gorak Shep offer increasingly dramatic high-altitude landscapes.
The area lies within Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site protecting rare wildlife including the Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and the elusive snow leopard. Four of the world's six highest peaks — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu — are visible from viewpoints in the region.
Best visited in spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November) when skies are clearest.
