Ghodaghodi Tal is the far west's great wetland — a complex of around a dozen shallow oxbow lakes, ponds and marshes covering some 2,563 hectares in the Siwalik foothills of Kailali district, right beside the East–West Highway. Designated Nepal's Ramsar site in 2003 and declared a bird sanctuary in 2022, it is the most important lowland lake system between Bardia and the Mahakali.
The name — 'horse-mare lake' — comes from a legend that Shiva and Parvati took the form of a horse and mare and circled these waters. On the bank stands a shrine of Gauri Mata, and the lake is above all a sacred place of the Tharu people: at Agahan Panchami (Nov–Dec) pilgrims offer terracotta horses, elephants and tigers to the goddess, and at Maghi, the Tharu new year in mid-January, families gather at the water for ritual baths and fairs.
For naturalists, Ghodaghodi is one of the best easy birding sites in Nepal — over 140 species including the globally threatened lesser adjutant and oriental darter, with mugger crocodiles basking on the lotus-fringed banks, Eurasian otters, and nearly 400 plant species in the surrounding sal forest.
Access could hardly be simpler: the main lake laps the highway at Sukhad, about an hour east of Dhangadhi, making it a natural break on any far-west journey and an easy half-day of shoreline walking, temple visiting and birdwatching from a hired boat.
