About this place

Ilam is Nepal's premier tea-growing district, a lush pocket of eastern Nepal where emerald-green tea gardens cascade down hillsides and morning mist settles over quiet villages. Often called the 'Darjeeling of Nepal,' Ilam produces some of the finest orthodox tea in the world — yet receives a fraction of the tourists.

The landscape is mesmerizing: endless rows of clipped tea bushes, red-soil paths winding between estates, and on clear mornings, the snow-capped wall of Kanchenjunga — the world's third-highest peak — dominating the northeastern horizon. The Kanyam tea estate is the most famous, but smaller organic gardens around Fikkal and Sandakpur offer equally stunning scenery with more solitude.

Beyond tea, Ilam is a gateway to the Mai Pokhari wetland — a sacred Ramsar-listed lake at 2,100m surrounded by moss-draped forest — and the Sandakpur ridge, which offers one of Nepal's finest panoramic views stretching from Everest to Kanchenjunga.

The town itself is a pleasant hill station at 1,200m with a mild climate year-round. The Saturday haat bazaar is a cultural experience in itself, where Limbu, Rai, and Brahmin communities trade produce, spices, and handmade goods. Try the local chiya (milk tea brewed with fresh Ilam leaves), cardamom-infused sel roti, and the seasonal bounty of kiwi, avocado, and mandarin that grows abundantly in the region.

Ilam is perfect for travelers looking to escape the well-trodden Kathmandu–Pokhara–Chitwan circuit and experience Nepal's quieter, greener side.
