About this place

Ramaroshan is not one lake but a whole highland landscape — 'bahra taal, athara patan', twelve lakes and eighteen meadows — scattered between roughly 2,000 and 3,800 metres across the ridgetops of Achham district. The largest is the Y-shaped Jigale Lake; around it, tarns alternate with sweeping grass patans including Kinemini, the biggest meadow in the district, where herders still drive their animals up for the summer in the old transhumant rhythm.

The name is woven from myth. One tradition says Lord Rama rested in the meadow called Roshan; another that Shiva and Parvati wandered these pastures after their wedding; a third remembers two brothers, Rama and Roshan, who first settled the high country. Whatever its origin, the area carries the easy sacredness of much of the far west — a place locals speak of as blessed rather than fenced off as a shrine.

The wildlife matches the setting: danfe (Himalayan monal, Nepal's national bird) in the rhododendron belts, musk deer and bear in the forest, and a long line of snow peaks — Api and Saipal among them — across the northern sky.

Ramaroshan sits two to three hours by road and trail from Mangalsen, the district headquarters, itself a long highland drive up from Dhangadhi. Simple homestays, picnic spots and rowing boats (introduced in recent years) make it the far west's most accessible taste of alpine lake country — an unhurried two-to-four-day detour almost no foreign itinerary yet includes.
