Khaptad National Park is a hidden gem in Nepal's far-western Sudurpaschim Province, protecting 225 square kilometers of rolling highland plateau at an average elevation of 3,000 meters. Named after the revered Hindu saint Khaptad Baba who meditated here for 50 years, the park combines natural beauty with deep spiritual significance.
The park's landscape is unlike anywhere else in Nepal — vast open grasslands (patan) dotted with wildflowers stretch to the horizon, broken by stands of oak, fir, and rhododendron forest. In spring (March-May), the meadows explode with hundreds of wildflower species, while autumn brings crystal-clear skies and views of the Api and Saipal Himalayan ranges.
Wildlife includes Himalayan black bear, leopard, musk deer, wild boar, and over 270 bird species including the colorful Himalayan monal and koklass pheasant. The Khaptad Baba ashram remains an active pilgrimage site, and the Triveni confluence of three rivers is considered sacred.
Reaching Khaptad requires commitment — a flight to Dhangadhi or Dipayal followed by a long jeep drive and 2-day trek. But those who make the journey find a peaceful, almost mystical landscape untouched by mass tourism. The park sees fewer than 500 visitors per year.
