Scenery
Everest Base Camp is all about high-altitude drama. You're surrounded by the world's tallest peaks — Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam. The landscape is stark, rocky, and awe-inspiring.
Annapurna Circuit offers diversity. You pass through subtropical forests, rice paddies, arid Tibetan plateaus, and high passes. The variety is unmatched — you'll see Annapurna I, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, and dozens more peaks.
Difficulty & Altitude
Both treks reach similar altitudes, but the profiles differ:
- EBC gains altitude steadily with rest days built in. The main challenge is the sustained high altitude over multiple days.
- Annapurna has one major push: crossing Thorong La Pass (5,416m) in a single day. The rest of the trek is more gradual.
Logistics
Getting to the trailhead
- EBC: Fly to Lukla (weather-dependent, flight cancellations are common) or trek from Jiri (adds 5–7 days)
- Annapurna: Drive from Pokhara — no risky flights
Permits
Both require TIMS cards plus national park/conservation area permits. Budget $50–70 per person.
Cost
Annapurna is generally 20–30% cheaper than EBC due to:
- No expensive flight to Lukla
- Lower teahouse prices (less remote)
- More competition among lodges
