Indreshwar Mahadev Temple in Panauti is widely regarded as one of the oldest surviving temples in Nepal, with an inscription dating its construction to 1294 CE — though local tradition holds that the site is far more ancient. The three-storied pagoda stands at the sacred confluence (triveni) of the Roshi and Punyamati rivers, a location chosen according to the same Vedic principles that make river confluences holy across the subcontinent.

The temple's woodwork is extraordinary. Every strut, tympanum, and window frame is carved with scenes from Hindu mythology: dancing Shivas, celestial musicians, entwined nagas, and erotic carvings that echo the traditions of Khajuraho. The craftsmanship represents the peak of medieval Newar woodcarving art, and the temple's survival through centuries of earthquakes is a testament to the skill of its builders.

Panauti itself is one of the best-preserved Newar towns in Nepal, a compact settlement of brick-and-timber townhouses, stone rest-houses (patis), and water spouts (dhunge dharas) that has changed remarkably little since the medieval period. The town hosts the Makar Mela every 12 years, a major bathing festival at the river confluence that draws hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.

Visitors to Indreshwar Mahadev will find Panauti a refreshing contrast to the Kathmandu Valley's more touristed sites. The town is about an hour's drive east of Kathmandu via Banepa, and the journey through the terraced middle hills is scenic. The temple, the town's quiet lanes, and the riverside ghats can easily fill a half-day visit.
