Panauti is a small medieval town set at the confluence of the Punyamati and Roshi rivers in Kavrepalanchok district, about 32 km southeast of Kathmandu. Despite its modest size, Panauti holds an outsized place in Newar architectural and religious heritage. The town's layout follows the classic mandala plan of ancient Newar settlements, with temples, rest houses, and bathing ghats arranged around a central axis leading to the sacred river confluence (triveni).
The crown jewel is the Indreshwar Mahadev Temple, a three-tiered pagoda dedicated to Shiva that scholars date to 1294 AD — making it a strong candidate for the oldest surviving wooden pagoda structure in Nepal. The temple's carved struts, depicting various forms of Shiva and Parvati, are masterworks of medieval Newari woodcraft. Surrounding the temple are the Unmatta Bhairav shrine, the Krishna Narayan temple, and a cluster of sattals (pilgrim rest houses) that give the area an almost museum-like quality of preservation.
At the river confluence, tiered stone ghats descend to the water, and the site is particularly sacred during Makar Sankranti (January), when a month-long Panauti Mela draws thousands of pilgrims for ritual bathing. Every twelve years, Panauti hosts the Makar Mela, one of Nepal's largest religious gatherings.
Panauti is reachable by local bus from Kathmandu's Ratna Park (1.5 hours) or Banepa (20 minutes). The town is compact and walkable. There is no entry fee, and the unhurried atmosphere makes it a refreshing contrast to the busier Durbar Squares of the valley.
