Shesh Narayan Temple is one of the four Char Narayan — the four principal Vishnu shrines of the Kathmandu Valley, each guarding a cardinal direction. Tucked into a limestone cliff face above Pharping, the temple is a striking sight: whitewashed pagoda roofs emerge from the rock, and a natural spring cascades over carved stone panels into a sacred pool below.
The temple's Licchavi-period stone carvings are among the finest in Nepal. Panels depicting Vishnu reclining on the cosmic serpent Shesha, Garuda, and scenes from the Hindu epics are carved directly into the cliff. The natural cave behind the main shrine is said to be where Vishnu rested, and the spring water issuing from the rock is considered sacred — devotees collect it in bottles to take home.
The setting is peaceful and almost grove-like, with ancient trees shading the courtyard and the sound of falling water providing a natural soundtrack. Unlike the crowded pilgrimage sites of central Kathmandu, Shesh Narayan receives a modest stream of devotees, giving visitors the chance to appreciate the art and atmosphere at leisure.
The temple is a short walk from both Dakshinkali Temple and the Asura Cave, making the Pharping area south of Kathmandu an excellent half-day excursion combining Hindu and Buddhist sacred sites with scenic countryside.
