Pharping (also spelled Pharping or Phamting) lies in a lush valley south of the Kathmandu basin, tucked against forested hills at a notably higher elevation than the valley floor. It is one of Nepal's most important multi-faith pilgrimage sites, where Hindu and Vajrayana Buddhist sacred geography overlap in extraordinary density.
For Buddhists, Pharping is hallowed as the place where Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava) — the saint who carried Buddhism to Tibet — meditated in the Asura Cave and attained the realization of Mahamudra. The cave, marked by a self-arisen handprint in the rock, is today a functioning meditation centre visited by Tibetan Buddhist practitioners from around the world. Nearby, the Yangleshö cave and the Dakshinkali Vajrayogini temple add further layers of Buddhist significance.
For Hindus, Pharping is the site of Dakshinkali Temple, one of Nepal's most powerful Shakti peethas, where animal sacrifices are offered to the goddess Kali on Tuesdays and Saturdays — drawing thousands of devotees. The Shesh Narayan (Sekh Narayan) Temple, built into a limestone cliff face with natural springs cascading over Vishnu images, is one of the valley's most visually striking shrines.
Pharping is 22 km from Kathmandu (about one hour by taxi or local bus). A full day allows visits to Dakshinkali, Shesh Narayan, the Asura Cave, and the surrounding monastery complex. Avoid Tuesdays and Saturdays if you prefer to skip the crowded sacrificial rituals at Dakshinkali.
