Dakshinkali Temple lies in a dramatic ravine at the meeting point of two mountain streams in Pharping, about 22 kilometers south of central Kathmandu. Dedicated to Kali in her southern (dakshina) manifestation, it is considered one of the most potent tantric temples in Nepal and draws large crowds of devotees, especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays when animal sacrifices are offered.
The open-air shrine sits at the bottom of a forested gorge, reached by a steep stairway. The black stone image of the six-armed Kali, adorned with garlands and vermilion, stands at the confluence where water runs red during major sacrifice days. The energy of the place is intense: the sound of temple bells, the scent of incense and marigolds, and the fervour of devotees create a visceral atmosphere unlike any other temple in the valley.
Dakshinkali is especially crowded during Dashain, when devotees offer goats, chickens, and ducks seeking the goddess's blessing and protection. After the sacrifice, families typically picnic in the surrounding forest with the sanctified meat — the temple grounds become a festive gathering. Saturdays also draw a steady stream of worshippers who bring offerings ranging from coconuts to live animals.
The forested hillside around the temple is rich with birdlife and makes a pleasant walk. Visitors uncomfortable with animal sacrifice should avoid Tuesdays and Saturdays; on other days the temple is calm and the setting is beautiful. The scenic drive from Kathmandu through Pharping village is part of the experience.
