Sankhu is a medieval Newar town on the northeastern edge of the Kathmandu Valley, once the gateway to Tibet via the Helambu-Sindhupalchok trade route. The town is dominated by the nearby Vajrayogini temple complex — a tantric Buddhist-Hindu shrine honouring the fierce wisdom-goddess Vajrayogini, one of the most important shakti pithas of the valley.
The walk starts at the carved stone gateway of Sankhu bazaar and climbs a stone-paved pilgrim path through forest and terraced fields. The temple complex at ~1,600m includes the main pagoda, stone-carved shrines, a meditation cave, and pilgrim resthouses. The surrounding oak-rhododendron forest is quiet and atmospheric — this is still very much a working pilgrimage site, especially crowded during Tihar and the annual Vajrayogini jatra.
Combine with a post-walk tour of Sankhu's old bazaar and Salinadi river ghats for a rich half-day on the quiet eastern edge of the valley.
