Begnas Lake — Begnas Tal in Nepali — lies about 15 kilometres east of Pokhara's Lakeside and is the second-largest of the nine lakes of the Pokhara valley, after Phewa. Set in a broad bowl of terraced farmland and forested ridges, it is significantly quieter than Phewa and has become the lake of choice for travellers looking for an afternoon away from the main tourist strip.
The lake is roughly 3.3 square kilometres in surface area and reaches depths of around 10 metres, making it both warm enough for swimming in season and deep enough for boating. A small stretch of the western shore has rowing boats and a handful of lakeside cafés; the rest of the perimeter is rural, with stone-paved paths through rice paddies, subsistence farms, and small Brahmin-Chhetri and Gurung villages. A short climb up to the Begnas Lake View Point on the ridge opens a classic view of Begnas, the smaller Rupa Lake in the next valley, and the Annapurna range framing the horizon.
Fishing is an important local livelihood — Begnas is stocked with carp and is the site of one of Nepal's main freshwater aquaculture programmes, which helps explain the lake's surprisingly productive ecology. Several villages around the lake run simple community homestays (notably around Sundari Danda and Majhi Kuna), offering a low-key base for walking, birdwatching, and cycling. Access is by local bus or taxi from Pokhara (about 30–40 minutes); October–April is the most reliable season.
