Ganesh Himal (Yangra)

Ganesh Himal is a sub-range of the Central Himalayas located approximately 70 km northwest of Kathmandu, straddling the border between Nepal's Rasuwa and Dhading districts and Tibet. The range is named after the Hindu god Ganesh — the elephant-headed deity of wisdom and remover of obstacles — for the distinctive elephant-like profile of its southern face visible from the Kathmandu Valley on clear winter mornings. The highest peak in the range, Ganesh I (also known as Yangra, 7,422m), is the westernmost 7,000m+ peak in Nepal.

First climbed on October 24, 1955 by Raymond Lambert, Pierre Vittoz, Eric Gauchat, and the remarkable Claude Kogan of a Swiss-French expedition — Kogan being one of the pioneering female Himalayan mountaineers of the era, who had previously reached 7,600m on Cho Oyu. Despite its proximity to Kathmandu, Ganesh Himal has seen very few expeditions since, making it one of the least-known 7,000m ranges in Nepal. The mountain presents significant challenges: complex glacier navigation, serac hazard, and unpredictable weather patterns funneling through the Trisuli River valley.

The Ganesh Himal region is culturally rich, home to Tamang and Gurung communities with deep Tibetan-Buddhist traditions. The Ruby Valley trek (named for the ruby and crystal deposits found in the area) is a hidden-gem 12-14 day circuit that traverses pristine rhododendron forests, high alpine pastures, and crosses the challenging Pangsang La (3,842m) and Sing La (4,050m) passes. Trekkers experience hot springs, traditional villages, and intimate views of the Ganesh massif without the crowds of Annapurna or Everest. The range is also spiritually revered — the southern peak Ganesh II (7,118m) is considered sacred by local communities. Best seasons: spring (March-May) and autumn (October-November).
