Nuwakot Durbar

Nuwakot is where the unification of Nepal was run from. Prithvi Narayan Shah took the town in 1744, early in the Gorkha campaign, and made it his forward base — a ridge fort commanding the Trishuli and Tadi river routes into the Kathmandu Valley — and from here his armies worked their way east for the next twenty-four years until Kathmandu fell in 1768. He died in 1775 at Devighat, at the river confluence below the palace. For a site this central to the founding of the modern state, it receives remarkably few visitors.

Saat Tale Durbar

The palace the campaign was directed from is the Saat Tale Durbar, the seven-storey palace, and it is the tallest historic building of its kind in Nepal. The plinth measures roughly 84 by 36 feet, the carved windows and struts were cut by craftsmen brought up from Lalitpur, and the floors were functionally divided in a way that reads like a description of a working command post: guards and courtiers at ground level, royal chambers and audience rooms above, then prayer rooms, armoury and quarters, and a prison at the top.

The palace does not stand alone. The walled compound holds the Ranga Mahal, a guard house, the house of Rana Bahadur Shah, and the Lampati, now a small museum. Around it, the old town carries a five-storey Taleju Bhawani temple and the Bhairabi temple, whose festival is the town's main annual event.

Nuwakot has been on Nepal's UNESCO tentative list since 2008 — a candidate, not an inscribed World Heritage site. The April 2015 earthquake did serious damage across the compound, and the restoration that followed is why the seven storeys are standing today; expect visible new timber and stone alongside the old.

Getting there, and what the day looks like

Nuwakot old town sits on a ridge at about 900 metres above Bidur, the district headquarters on the Trishuli, roughly 70 km from Kathmandu on the Pasang Lhamu Highway. Allow three hours each way; it is a normal-car road. Most people do it as a long day trip, and the usual stop on the way up is Kakani on the valley rim.

It is a comfortable half day on site: the palace compound, the temples, the old brick lanes of the town, and the view north — the Ganesh Himal wall across the Trishuli, and Langtang Lirung on the northeast horizon on a clear morning. Devighat, at the Trishuli–Tadi confluence, is a short drive below and worth adding for the reason above.

The same Trishuli road continues north through Dhunche to Langtang Valley, so Nuwakot also works as a first-afternoon stop on the way to a Langtang trek rather than as a round trip from the city.

In the sequence

Read it alongside the other two Shah-era sites. Gorkha Durbar is where the dynasty and the campaign started; Nuwakot is where it was based for three decades; Kathmandu Durbar Square is what it was aimed at and what it became. Visiting them in that order is the clearest way to read eighteenth-century Nepal on the ground.

When to go

Autumn and winter are best. At 900 metres it is warm and clear from October through February, and winter mornings give the sharpest mountain views of the year. Spring is pleasant but hazy and hot by midday. Avoid the monsoon: the Trishuli corridor is humid, the mountains are invisible, and the highway is landslide-prone.
