Kakani sits on a ridge 23 km northwest of Kathmandu at 2,073m and is the classic escape for residents seeking open sky, pine forest, and an unobstructed Himalayan view without the crowds of Nagarkot. The viewpoint looks directly north at Ganesh Himal (7,422m), with Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, Manaslu, and Himalchuli unfurling east and west.
The short hike loops from the old British-era Kakani resort through pine plantations, the former memorial park for the 1992 Thai Airways crash, and open pastures to the ridge viewpoint. Wild strawberries and rhododendron line the path in spring. The area is also famous for its trout farms and local strawberry wine.
This is one of the easiest 'proper Himalayan view' hikes in the valley — suitable for families, beginners, and as a warm-up before bigger treks.
