Bandipur

Bandipur is a hidden gem perched on a ridge between Kathmandu and Pokhara. This former Newari trading town was an important stop on the India-Tibet trade route until the Prithvi Highway bypassed it in the 1960s. That bypass turned out to be a blessing — Bandipur was frozen in time, preserving its cobblestone streets, traditional shophouses, and cultural character.

The main bazaar street is lined with beautifully maintained Newari buildings with carved wooden windows and doors. The town offers panoramic views of the Himalayan range including Dhaulagiri, Manaslu, and the Annapurna massif, plus the Marsyangdi River valley below.

Bandipur has a thriving local culture — visit the Thani Mai temple, explore Siddha Gufa (one of the largest caves in Nepal), or simply sit in the town square watching village life unfold. The town comes alive during festivals, especially Dashain.

There are no ATMs and limited connectivity, which is part of the charm. A handful of heritage-style hotels offer atmospheric accommodation. It's easily visited as a detour between Kathmandu and Pokhara (about 8km off the highway). The same Prithvi Highway carries the Kurintar base station of the Manakamana Temple cable car, east toward Kathmandu — the two make a natural pair on the drive west.
