Bhupatindra Malla

The builder-king of Bhaktapur, author of its golden skyline.

Share:

Bhupatindra Malla presided over Bhaktapur's artistic high-water mark. His reign produced the towering Nyatapola and reshaped the royal palace, and his seated bronze figure still watches over the Durbar Square from a column before the Golden Gate.

His signature works are vertical and virtuosic — the five-storey Nyatapola is the tallest pagoda in the Valley — but he also remodelled inherited structures, most famously bringing the 55-Window Palace to its celebrated form after earthquake damage.

As with every Malla king, the Durbar Square as a whole is a multi-reign creation. The nodes mapped below are the works specifically tied to his reign.
