Overview

The Annapurna Circuit by Mountain Bike turns one of the world's great treks into a high-altitude cycling expedition. As jeep roads have pushed deep into the Manang and Kali Gandaki valleys, riders now circumnavigate the Annapurna massif, crossing the 5,416m Thorong La pass before descending the arid western side past Muktinath and Marpha.

This is provisional, best-available planning information published ahead of verified route data. The day structure, distances, and the rideable-versus-portage split are indicative and will be corrected when official figures are available.

This Is an Expedition

This is not a holiday tour. A significant share of the high section above Manang is hike-a-bike rather than rideable, the pass crossing is at extreme altitude, and weather can close the route at short notice. Treat it as a mountaineering-grade objective on a bike.

Acclimatization

Altitude is the single biggest risk. Build in a rest day around Manang before the pass and keep daily elevation gains conservative. The recommended buffer accounts for weather and acclimatization, not sightseeing.

Permits

The route runs through the Annapurna Conservation Area and requires an ACAP permit and a TIMS card. Carry both and confirm current costs and checkpoints before departure.

Season

October-November and March-April are the only sensible windows. Monsoon makes the lower valleys dangerous and winter closes the pass. See best season for mountain biking in Nepal.

Getting There

Most riders base in Pokhara and travel to the eastern trailhead to ride counter-clockwise for better acclimatization. The western descent exits through Kagbeni and the Lower Mustang corridor, which can be ridden as a gentler add-on or escape route.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you really cycle the Annapurna Circuit?

Yes, but it is an expedition-grade ride. Much of the high section above Manang is hike-a-bike, the Thorong La pass is at 5,416m, and acclimatization is essential. It suits experienced, very fit riders only.

How many days does the Annapurna Circuit take by bike?

Plan for around ten riding days plus acclimatization and weather buffer days. This is provisional guidance; the exact schedule depends on fitness, road conditions, and how much of the high section is rideable.

What permits do I need for the Annapurna Circuit?

An ACAP permit and a TIMS card are required for the Annapurna Conservation Area. Confirm current fees and checkpoint rules locally before you start.
