Mustang by Mountain Bike: Jomsom, Kagbeni and Muktinath

Overview

Lower Mustang offers some of Nepal's most cinematic riding, in the arid rain-shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. The route threads the deep Kali Gandaki gorge from Jomsom up to the medieval village of Kagbeni, climbs to the pilgrimage site of Muktinath, and returns through the apple-orchard village of Marpha.

Distances, surfaces, and the day-by-day line are provisional and indicative, published ahead of verified route data. Confirm conditions, permits, and flights locally before committing.

The Wind

The defining feature of Mustang riding is the wind. Strong, predictable up-valley gusts build through the late morning and afternoon, so most cyclists ride uphill in the calmer early hours and shelter or sightsee later. Plan every day around this rhythm.

Altitude

The corridor sits between roughly 2,000m and 3,710m at Muktinath. It is high enough to need respect: build a buffer day, ascend gradually, and watch for altitude symptoms near the temple.

Permits

Lower Mustang (the Jomsom-Muktinath corridor) requires an ACAP permit but not the expensive Upper Mustang restricted-area permit, which only applies north of Kagbeni toward Lo Manthang. Confirm the current boundary and rules before riding north.

Getting There

Jomsom has an airport with short flights from Pokhara, weather permitting, and is also reachable by jeep. Flights are frequently delayed or cancelled by wind, so keep your schedule flexible.

Season

March-May and September-November are the best windows. Winter is cold and can close higher sections; monsoon affects the approach more than the rain-shadow corridor itself. See best season for mountain biking in Nepal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a special permit to cycle in Mustang?

Lower Mustang, the Jomsom to Muktinath corridor, requires an ACAP permit. The separate, costly Upper Mustang restricted-area permit only applies north of Kagbeni toward Lo Manthang. Confirm current rules locally.

Why is wind such a big deal in Mustang?

The Kali Gandaki valley funnels strong up-valley winds that build through the late morning and afternoon. Riders plan to climb in the calmer early hours and avoid being caught high and exposed later in the day.

How do I get to Jomsom to start the ride?

Jomsom has short flights from Pokhara when weather allows, and is reachable by jeep. Flights are often delayed or cancelled by wind, so keep your plans flexible and carry buffer days.
