Overview

Pokhara is the natural home of cycling tourism in Nepal's Gandaki Province. Sitting at 800m on the shore of Phewa Lake with the Annapurna range rising to the north, it pairs gentle lakeside riding with steep hill climbs and is the focus of the province's cycling-tourism push under the Gandaki provincial cycling budget, FY 2081/82.

The routes below are published with provisional, best-available data. Distances, surfaces, and alignments are indicative and will be corrected as verified provincial route data becomes available — always confirm current conditions locally.

The Routes

Lake to Lake (flagship loop)

The Lake to Lake Mountain Bike Loop is Pokhara's signature ride, linking Phewa Lake with Begnas Lake and quieter Rupa Lake across roughly 85km of lakeside road, farm track, and hill lanes. It is rideable as a long day or a relaxed two-day outing, and is the route most associated with the provincial 'Lake to Lake' programme.

Around Phewa Lake (easy)

The Around Phewa Lake Ride is the gentlest option — a mostly flat shoreline circuit with an optional climb toward the World Peace Pagoda. It suits beginners and families and works as a warm-up for the longer loop.

Sarangkot - Naudanda ridge (hard)

The Pokhara - Sarangkot - Naudanda Ridge Ride climbs to the famous Sarangkot sunrise viewpoint and traverses the ridgeline west, with continuous Annapurna and Dhaulagiri views. The climb is the crux and rewards strong riders.

Seasons

October-December and February-April give the most stable skies and clear mountain views. Avoid the June-September monsoon, when surfaces deteriorate and visibility drops. See best season for mountain biking in Nepal for the full breakdown.

Bikes and Logistics

Rental hardtails and a few full-suspension bikes are available in Lakeside, but quality varies — inspect brakes and drivetrain before committing to a hill route. Carry water, sun protection, and a basic repair kit; support is thin once you leave the valley floor. Browse all Pokhara lakeside and hill routes for context.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Pokhara Valley lake and ridge routes do not require trekking permits. Routes entering the Annapurna Conservation Area require an ACAP permit. Confirm current rules locally before riding.
