Samay Baji

Samay Baji is not a meal. It's a ritual offering arranged on a plate. The Newar community has served this exact set — unchanged in centuries — at births, weddings, Mha Puja — the fourth day of Tihar, which in 2026 falls on November 10 — Yomari Punhi, Indra Jatra feasts, ancestor-worship rites, and almost every gathering where the community marks itself as a community.

The canonical samay baji contains: chiura (the base), bara (lentil patty), boiled egg, choila (smoked or boiled buff), bhuti (boiled black-eyed beans), bhatmas sadeko (spiced soybeans), wauncha (a spiced ginger-chili relish), aalu achar, and a small cup of aila — the rice spirit. Each item has a meaning. Each placement on the plate has a meaning. The order in which you eat matters.

Samay baji and the Newari khaja set overlap heavily in ingredients but are not the same dish. Khaja set is the everyday restaurant version — order it at a bhatti for lunch. Samay baji is ceremonial: prepared at home or at a community sattal, blessed before eating, served on banana leaves or brass plates, and accompanied by specific prayers. Tourists rarely encounter the true ceremonial version unless invited to a Newar household event.

Mha Puja — the Newar 'self-worship' day on the fourth day of Tihar — is when samay baji reaches its fullest form. Each family member sits before their own mandap (sand mandala) on the floor, with their own samay baji plate, and is honored with the ritual. It's one of the few Nepali festivals where the ritual food is the ritual.
