Chhath Puja wishes

Chhath is the strictest fast in the Nepali calendar and the only major festival addressed directly to the sun. Its greetings are quieter than most, and they are the more meaningful for it.

What a Chhath wish is about

Four days, a nirjala fast of around thirty-six hours without water, and offerings made standing in a river at sunset and again at sunrise. It is kept most in the Tarai — Janakpur, Siraha, Saptari — and the person you are messaging is very likely either fasting or supporting somebody who is. That shapes the wish: not celebration but endurance and respect, and often addressed to a parbaitin, the woman keeping the fast, rather than to a household.

Know Chhath Puja wishes better than we do?

We write from research and reporting, and the ground changes faster than we can keep up. If something here is out of date, or you have been and would tell it differently, we would rather hear it.
