Indra Jatra wishes

Indra Jatra belongs to Kathmandu in a way few festivals belong to a city. Eight days of chariots, masked dances and a living goddess, mostly within a few square kilometres of Hanuman Dhoka.

What a Indra Jatra wish is about

This is a wish about a place more than about a family. The Kumari's chariot goes out on three routes, Lakhey dances in the streets, Bhairav's mask opens at Indra Chowk, and the people who care most about it are the ones who grew up inside those routes and are no longer standing on them. So an Indra Jatra greeting usually says something closer to *I know where you would rather be tonight* than *best wishes* — and if you are sending to somebody in the Valley, the useful thing you can add is which day you mean.

Help us get it right

Know Indra Jatra wishes better than we do?

We write from research and reporting, and the ground changes faster than we can keep up. If something here is out of date, or you have been and would tell it differently, we would rather hear it.
