Dashain wishes

Dashain is the greeting season in Nepal. For fifteen days the country moves — home to parents, home to a village, home to whoever is senior — and the wish that travels with it is a blessing, not a slogan.

What a Dashain wish is about

The gesture at the centre of Dashain is tika: an elder presses rice, curd and vermilion onto a younger forehead, tucks jamara behind the ear, and says something. That something is what a Dashain wish is for. It moves downward through a family — parents to children, elder siblings to younger — which is why a Dashain message to someone senior is usually a request for their blessing rather than an offer of yours. If you are the one abroad this year, the line that lands is the one that admits the distance instead of writing around it.

Help us get it right

Know Dashain wishes better than we do?

We write from research and reporting, and the ground changes faster than we can keep up. If something here is out of date, or you have been and would tell it differently, we would rather hear it.
