What a Janmashtami wish is about
Nowhere in Nepal observes it like the Krishna Mandir in Patan Durbar Square: a 17th-century stone temple of twenty-one spires, lit with oil lamps, with bhajan going all night and a queue that runs the length of the square. This is the least familial festival on this list — there is no tika, no thread, no elder and younger. The wish is devotional, and it is usually sent to someone you know keeps the night: an aunt who fasts, a friend who sings, a household that goes down to the square. Timing is the whole trick. Send it in the evening while they are still awake for it, or at midnight itself.
