Nepal Sambat wishes

Nepal Sambat turns on the fourth day of Tihar, and the Newar new year arrives with a greeting of its own — Nhudanya Bhintuna — exchanged in the street as much as at home.

What a Nepal Sambat wish is about

The day has two halves. Indoors it is Mha Puja: each person sits before a mandala drawn for them and is worshipped as the life the household is keeping, lamp and all. Outdoors it is the new year, with Bhintuna rallies through Kathmandu, Patan and Bhaktapur and in Newar communities abroad. So a Nepal Sambat wish can go either way — a blessing for the person's own health and years, which is what Mha Puja is about, or a plain happy new year to anyone who keeps the Newar calendar. If they are far from home, say the mandala part: somebody drew one for them anyway.

Know Nepal Sambat wishes better than we do?

We write from research and reporting, and the ground changes faster than we can keep up. If something here is out of date, or you have been and would tell it differently, we would rather hear it.
